Holiday Interview: NICOLE FONTANE FROM LINEAGE

‘Tis the season to be jolly, Fa-la-la-la-laaaa! Introducing Sissy Lu’s second annual festive Character Interview, featuring Nicole from Lineage. Grab a cup of eggnog or some wassail, but beware the mistletoe!

Nicole, give us some small deets below!

Full name: Nicole Marguerite Fontane

Age: 28

Favorite Season:  I would say winter, but Tulare doesn’t have seasons. We have heat and an occasional rain shower. It would be nice to experience the cold once.

Favorite Cookie: I don’t like sugar.

Favorite Hot Beverage:  Black coffee. I can drink the stuff all day long!

1. Why don’t you introduce yourself! Tell us who you are and what you do.

My name is Nicole Fontane. I rarely use my middle name, but since you asked, it’s Marguerite. My mother is French. At least that’s what I’ve believed all this time, but I’m learning that might not be true. But that’s a story for another time. Anyhoo, who am I is a question that I don’t readily know. I mean, besides the basic (female, age 28, single…etc) I guess I’m still trying to figure that out. I live on Tulare Island. An island created by magick. So, that’s something. I believe I’ve worked at every available job on the island. Like I said, still trying to find me. But, as luck will have it, I have fallen into a career as a vigilante. Again, another one of those long stories. But, and please don’t tell anyone this, I actually love it! What does that say about me? No, seriously, what does that say about me??? Maybe I have discovered who I am after all.

2. What is your favorite thing to eat around the holidays?

I have to say mashed potatoes with lots of butter. Not a fan of gravy. Also, those buttery rolls and turkey but it has to be the dark meat. No matter how long you marinate the turkey, the white meat is always too dry! And, seriously, I don’t like gravy.

3. What is on the top of your Wishlist this year?

A new car. Of course, I won’t get it unless I buy it myself, but it’s nice to wish for one.

4. If you’re expected at a party are you usually on time or fashionably late?

I loathe being late to ANYTHING! But especially a party. I have to get there, eat some of the snacks, get a few drinks in me, before I have to face a slew of people.

5. What is your fondest memory surrounding the holiday season?

After learning there was no Santa Claus (I wasn’t really hurt by this knowledge), I enjoyed shopping for my presents. My parents really did give up all the pretense and just let me pick out the toys I wanted. I even enjoyed wrapping them. Yes, that’s a little strange, but it’s what we did!

6.  Are you a fan of eggnog or no?

Oh, no! Way too sweet! And NASTY!!!!

7. There is mistletoe hanging in the doorway… are you going to kiss the person beside you or not?

HELL YES!!!! TWICE!

8. It’s snowing outside, are you out there playing in it or refusing to step foot outside until the season turns?

I would go outside. I have never experienced snow so the curiosity would propel me out. But then, given the island I live on, I’d have to wonder if magick was involved to make it snow. Curiosity would quickly turn into fear.

9. If you could ask for ANYTHING for Christmas, what would it be and why?

Still would ask for that car. LOL! The air-conditioning in mine is not working. We have constant heat. It can get real uncomfortable. Why not fix it? I’ve tried. Believe me, I have. Or, rather, the mechanic has. I’m starting to think the man has been ripping me off.

10. What kind of shopper are you? Do you plan ahead of time or do you rush in a last minute effort?

Get in and get out! I can’t stand crowds!

11. Did you ever believe in Santa? If so, how old were you when you topped believing?

My curiosity dispelled me of that belief early. I caught my parents putting presents under the tree and 500 questions later, they finally admitted there was no Santa Claus. Didn’t matter. I still got presents every year.

12. Tell us one of your favorite stories that revolves around this season.

I have to say, I love Rudolph. He is one reindeer with some serious gumption!

13. Who in your immediate circle is most likely to go caroling?

Marta and her kids go every year. They force me and Kara to come along. Let me repeat that. THEY FORCE ME AND KARA TO COME ALONG!!!

14. If you could cast your acquaintances [including yourself,] in Scrooge, who would play what roles?

I, of course, would play the ghost of Christmas Present. I don’t like to dwell in the past. At least that is what I keep telling myself. And so far, it’s been working!

Kara, one of my best friends, would play the ghost of the future. She is always trying to subtly steer me in the right direction.

Marta, my other best friend, would play the ghost of the past. She always says there are lessons to be learned from the mistakes we have made. And, if she’s right, I have A LOT of lessons just waiting for me to explore. Of course, I would have to acknowledge the past first. NOT!

And, my new boss, Devlin Grey would be Scrooge. You can tell him I said that!

Alek, oh boy does he get my…sorry, lost my self the for a minute. Anyhoo, he would be the ghost to come back and teach scrooge a lesson.

Okay, dangit, I’d be Scrooge!

15. What is your New Year’s Resolution?

To not fear the past.

16. Is there anything else you’d like to tell us?

Yeah, if you want to know about me, check out LINEAGE by author extraordinaire, C. Vonzale Lewis!

Ho Ho Ho, did you know all of that about Nicole? Bet you didn’t. Be sure to check out the author’s page as well as social media to ensure you are up to date on Nicole and the rest of the crew!

Fantastic answers! Thanks so much, C. Vonzale Lewis, where can readers find more about you and your books?

About the Author:

Author photoCVLewisCarla Vonzale Lewis likes her martini’s shaken…never stirred. Though she was born in Georgia, please don’t mistake her for a Georgia peach. She’s more like a prickly pear. Speaking of being born, someone asked her recently if she remembered her birth, and all she had to say was, “Yes, I do remember that handsy doctor pulling me out into the cold. Right Bastard!!!”

Despite being born in the South, she grew up in the North. California to be exact. And every once in a great while, she gets to experience all four seasons. But mostly, it’s just heat.

Her debut novel, LINEAGE, was released July 16, 2019 and she fully intends to ride that joy for the rest of her life.

When she’s not concocting her next contemporary fantasy story, she enjoys reading, binge watching shows on Netflix, and trying to convince her husband that getting a dog is a wonderful idea.

Lineage

Smart-mouthed Nicole Fontane has a way of getting herself into trouble.

She’s been fired from every job she’s had but still refuses to work in her father’s apothecary shop because of his practice of Earth Magick.

On Tulare Island where Nicole grew up, Magick has always been a way of life—one she’s determined to avoid at all costs. With less than two hundred dollars in the bank and rent due, Nicole is forced to take a job at Tribec Insurance as a last resort. Little does she realize, the moment she sets foot inside the building, she becomes a pawn.

A sinister force has set its sights on her and will stop at nothing to use her in a sadistic game. Tribec’s proprietors, the Stewart family, are curiously preoccupied with the Naqada, the mysterious pre-dynastic Egyptian society.

Nicole finds it creepy, but on the bright side, the job reconnects her with her estranged friend, Marta. Yet the eerie atmosphere, disappearing Magick wards, and the smell of blood inside Tribec bring Nicole to a startling conclusion—the Stewarts are practicing Blood Magick, the deadliest of the Five Principles.

By the time Nicole uncovers the truth, Marta and her four children have gone missing, and all signs implicate the Stewarts and an archaic blood ritual to an Old One, a Naqada god imprisoned on Tulare Island. Battling the evil of Blood Magick will demand Nicole confront a hidden past and unlock the Magick buried within. But can she set aside her deep-rooted fears to work with a team of vigilante Mages? Or will the clock run out on Marta and her children—and on Nicole?
